Avenue
O
Just a few minutes’ walk from the Historic Strand District and only a few blocks away from the beach and the Pleasure Pier, this hotel offers five-star service and delectable gourmet treats in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. This 1924 Mediterranean style historic inn exhibits a comfortable elegance throughout and has been expertly designed by Bill Milligan, a native of Galveston, providing a relaxing atmosphere with modern conveniences, while highlighting the historic home’s features like picture rail molding and original wood flooring. The inn is located in the Old Silk Stocking Historic District. The property is situated on a third of an acre and is encircled by thick tropical vegetation, which makes it a great environment for a romantic getaway as well as a quick break from the stress of working throughout the day. The land is adorned with pecan, fig, and citrus trees, and it also features herb and vegetable gardens, which provide the fresh ingredients needed for the preparation of homemade kitchen presents. In February of 2021, temperatures below freezing caused significant damage to the garden. We are grateful that you have been so patient with us as we work to restore the grounds to good health.
The bed and breakfast that is located on Avenue O was not run by your grandmother. It has the conveniences that one would expect from a large hotel, but it also has the cozy atmosphere and individualized care of a home away from home. As soon as you walk through the door of this one-of-a-kind and cozy bed and breakfast in Galveston, you will understand what it means to truly experience island hospitality. To quote one of our favorite sayings, “come as our guest; depart as our friend” We are happy to have anyone over the age of 10 join us. You are going to be evaluated not based on the color of your skin, the religion you practice, how you identify as a gender, or your sexual orientation, but on the substance of your character. If you are kind to one another and show respect for our house rules and property, we will get along swimmingly.
We promise to deliver the greatest possible experience to our guests by providing them with clean, pleasant lodgings and food that has been lovingly prepared. We are foodies; we enjoy eating, and we prepare meals for ourselves and others. Polly, who considers herself a chef because she wears a garment that proclaims her to be one, adores spending time in the kitchen and providing adventurers with scrumptious and satiating food. The meticulous preparation of each meal makes use of seasonal, locally sourced, and, whenever possible, in-house cultivated produce and ingredients. When customers book their accommodations directly through our website, they are eligible to receive individualized services, like complimentary VIP shuttle and parking for cruise ships. Do you want to dazzle the object of your affection with the sight of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries waiting for you in your suite? Do you need to make reservations for dinner? Do you want to find out where the finest place is to drink a beer? Which excursions are truly worth the money they cost? Do you require assistance in reserving a horse-drawn carriage for dinner? Have you ever thought about hosting a romantic meal for just the two of you? You can count on AveO to assist you! Because we enjoy interacting with people, we will do everything in our power to ensure that your stay is one to remember. Jeff is a Certified Tourism Ambassador, and one of his favorite things to do is talk about the island’s history.
Avenue O is the ideal location for hosting any upcoming important event that you have planned. Even the catering for your event is provided by us. Have a tea party in the garden or mix and mingle with your friends in front of the fire in the living room while listening to music played on the baby grand piano that was purchased in 1927. Our grounds offer the ideal location for a wedding or a celebration of renewing one’s wedding vows, and they come complete with a gazebo and a tent for holding events. You can invite up to 25 of your closest family and friends to attend. Jeff is a minister and may officiate at your ceremony. Allow us to assist you in developing an experience that will be unforgettable for your upcoming special event.
The home was initially constructed by Johnson Brothers Construction for Henry Trueheart Adriance and his wife Eva Jones Adriance. Henry Trueheart Adriance was a partner in the first chartered real estate firm in Galveston, and Eva Jones Adriance was a community organizer and hostess par excellence. A little more than $12,000 was spent, and the price tag covered the expense of two complete bathrooms and five closets. One of the very rare homes in all of Galveston to have a basement is the Adriance Home. The basement was originally constructed to house a coal-burning boiler; it even had a coal-shoot off the road. These days, it is used to store the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and water heating equipment. Throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, the Adriance residence served as a gathering spot for the community, hosting events such as social gatherings, committee meetings, and family get-togethers. For several decades prior to the purchase of their property in 1983 by Gerry and Giles Bennett, Galveston was plagued by difficult economic circumstances. In addition to being a prominent member of the community and an organizer, Gerry is also the proprietor of Posh Interiors, which he used to spruce up the old property by installing opulent window and ceiling treatments as well as beautifully matching wallpaper and paint. The house has been restored to its former glory. Jim and Connie Porter purchased the house in 2003 and subsequently opened it up for business as a bed and breakfast. They moved to the highlands in 2018 to enjoy their retirement.
After having successful careers in the corporate world that spanned four decades, Jeff and Polly Jones decided to become innkeepers. The Jones family exemplifies what it means to provide genuine southern hospitality by fulfilling their lifelong dream of hosting gatherings in the historical home they lovingly refurbished. The phrase “Come as Our Guest; Leave as Our Friend” serves as the motto for AveO. The space features pieces of heirloom furniture that have been passed down through generations, such as the baby grand piano that belonged to Grandma and was entirely restored in 1927 and the Lalique chandelier that belonged to Mom. During the course of the home’s renovation, the concrete and metal lathe formed inside walls as well as the solid concrete exterior were revealed, illuminating the reason why this residence has been able to withstand almost a century’s worth of hurricanes with relatively minor damage. Original elements of the house have been preserved, such as the picture rail molding and the coal boiler vents; however, the vents are no longer used for their intended purpose and are instead used to convey breakfast scents directly from the kitchen to the suites. By the time the house celebrates its centenary anniversary in 2024, the entire property, both inside and out, should be completely restored.
